Dan Strawn writes extremely well about a subject he knows intimately. A look at American history the style of which I've not seen before. The reader is able to put themselves into the shoes (be they moccasins or army boots) and understand what it was like to have lived in that time, and experienced the different lifestyles that are written about.As a New Zealander, I could wish we had a writer able to write as Strawn does, and that is to write the history without bias, which allows a reader to think about it for themselves, and to immerse themselves in the history.
If the American educational system were to pick this book up and use it for a text book, it would hugely benefit both teacher and pupil. It is that good.

If you enjoy reading historically based books with wonderfully appealing characters, or if you are just always on the lookout for a well written story, I highly recommend Lame Bird’s Legacy by Dan Strawn. The author is a natural born storyteller whose writing engages you from the very start. With each paged turned you begin to feel more invested in the storyline, and as each character is introduced, the historical drama begins to unfolds. Early on, it is revealed that there are several personal journeys taking place in Lame Bird’s Legacy. Eventually they all become fatefully interwoven as the main characters; a young Nez Pearce Indian brave Lame Bird, the other, a fledgling Cavalrymen Isaac Ramsey, find themselves on opposite sides in the middle of the Nez Perce war of 1877. Along the way, other key figures emerge, adding even more depth to the story.
As treaties with the Nez Perce Indians are made and broken by the white man, their leader Chief Joseph, resists efforts to remove his people from their beloved land in the fertile Wallowa Valley (what is now northeastern Oregon), and onto a designated Indian reservation in Idaho. The tribe has lost trust in the white man’s promises, and the United States Calvary takes chase across the west, in pursuit of the “off” reservation Nez Perce Indian’s through; Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana. Along the journey, both Indians and soldiers alike, experience hardships, difficult decisions, and life altering revelations. Lame Bird’s Legacy is filled with a vast array of interesting characters, each with their own story to tell.
Dan Strawn has an amazing ability to draw you into the story, as he creates for the reader a fascinating historical backdrop. I found it hard to put the book down, once I began reading it. The characters were so rich and diverse that I was quickly captivated by and invested in their lives, and caught up in the journey’s each were taking.
The author is an accomplished writer and it is clear that his work with the Nez Perce tribe, and at the Nez Perce National Historical Park as an interpreter, has impacted his writing. I have read other stories by this author (Isaac’s Gun for one.) and I wholly encourage you to read them! If you are a history buff, or enjoy historical fiction; or, if you just want to read a well written novel, pick up one of Dan Strawn’s books. You won’t be disappointed!
This book is not in a genre I would usually choose to read, and I was unsure how much I would actually enjoy it. However, it was so well written, with an interesting and engrossing plot, and strong, three dimensional characters, that I don't think it would have mattered what genre it was, the strength of the story would still have shone through.
Based in the American west, during a dark and shameful period, when Native Americans were systematically persecuted, relocated and even killed, the novel offers a fascinating insight into the lives of a tribe caught up in the middle of this, In particular, it tells the story of Lame Bird, a young man of the tribe, whom, when the story opens, has just come of age and is embarking on his spirit quest.
The author has plainly thoroughly researched the period, and this added to the story's authenticity, making it believable, enforcing the shocking events as they occurred. One point I did enjoy very much, and congratulate the author on, was the way he didn't just paint a picture of red man good/white man bad, but, instead, tried to show there were heroes and villains on both sides. His portrayal of the acts of compassion and barbarity by soldiers and Indians alike, being an accurate reflection on the complexity of human nature.
I discovered the list of Indian names and their relationships within the tribe, prior to reading, and was glad I had, sometimes needing to look up a character whom I couldn't place. Far from being annoying, this made me think about each and every individual, until a mental family tree was fixed in my mind, thus adding depth to the reading.
In places, this book felt like an historical drama, and reminded me of a documentary I watched as child about the West, its story told through contemporary letters and journals. I remember being impressed by the gravitas of the voices, narrating the lives and experiences of those long ago people. This novel gave me a similar feeling, again, adding to the whole reading experience.
Dan Strawn was not an author I had ever read before, but is certainly one I will be reading again in the future. Thoroughly recommended.
A great story about Native Americans conflicts that is told from very personal viewpoints both on the Native American side and on the U. S. Cavalry side. Interesting perspectives both. Well worth reading if you have any interest in the treatment dished out to Native Americans.
This book was a surprise to me. It had an easy plot flow while developing the characters and story line in engrossing scenarios enabling the reader to partake in the adventure.
But don't get complacent.
It's not just a good read but also a lesson in ethics and morals. Altruism and empathy form a juxtaposition with the evil of human shallowness.
Dan's use of authentic history is detailed perfection. It left me wanting more.
